Kathleen grew up in the Bay Area during the 1960s and 1970s. As one of nine children she became resourceful and creative. Her love of art and creating began at a young age; as a child she loved drawing, coloring, and arranging and gluing things together. She attended a Catholic elementary school, then public junior high and high school. After graduation, she moved to Utah to attend Brigham Young University where she earned two degrees in Communications. After working full-time for a few years, she married and focused on raising a family.
Her children attended Meridian School in Provo where they received a well-rounded education, including art classes. When the art teacher unexpectedly quit, Kathleen volunteered to teach art classes until they found a replacement. To her surprise, she enjoyed teaching children and renewed her love of art and creating. She became the permanent art teacher for the lower grades and stayed for 15 years, even through the lower school’s transition into Arches Academy.
In 2017, Kathleen left a job she loved and began attending Utah Valley University as a student in the Art & Design program. So far, she has taken classes in Drawing, Painting, 2-D and 3-D Design, Printmaking, Watermedia, and Color Theory. She has participated in several student art shows including the juried UVU Student Art Show. Her artwork was also chosen for three shows at the Springville Museum of Art: Two Spiritual & Religious Art Shows and the Spring Salon *Fall Edition where she was awarded two Honorable Mentions. Selected works have been featured at The Covey Center, jkr gallery, and the Eccles Art Center in Ogden.
In addition to making art, Kathleen also enjoys gardening, reading, family history, cooking, travel, and walking the Murdock Trail with her husband and her pug, Quincy.
There is still a lot I want to learn about creating art. So far, I have worked with a variety of mediums including oil and acrylic paint, watercolor, pen and ink, mixed media, and printmaking. Much of my artwork focuses on portraits, places and textures in nature. These images are related to something personal, memories and observation—probably places I like to be and people I want to spend time with, and my Lithuanian heritage. Also, moments that stand out to me in the world.
I am interested in stories—every person, every place, and every object has a history. I want to tell these stories through my artwork, especially my own. I am also interested in found objects, both in nature and man-made castoffs. Some of these objects will be incorporated into my artwork. Right now, I am still discovering my artistic capabilities and look forward to finding the best mediums and style to continue telling my story.
